Self-Balancing Personalget Mobility: The Launch of Wandercraft Eve
Following FDA clearance, the French company Wandercraft is introducing wayst—the first personal, self-balancing exoskeleton designed to provide hands-free upright mobility. This device represents a significant advancement in rehabilitative robotics by acting as an electronic vestibular apparatus.
Key Technical Capabilities and Test Results
- Innovative Self-Balance Technology: Unlike traditional devices requiring crutches or walkers, Eve uses sensors to continuously monitor body position/balance via 12 motors located at the hips, knees, and ankles; this allows for standing without external support (crutches).
- Proven Functional Recovery: In clinical trials involving patients enough to experience paraplegia or tetraplegia, all participant pairs successfully passed control tests including sitting down, getting up, walking, and performing certain daily tasks after only four training sessions.
- Safety Mechanismsetup: To ensure safety during use on flat indoor surfaces, speed is intentionally limited to 0.25 m/s, and if battery power fails, specialized brakes allow the user to be lowered smoothly back to the floor.
Operational Constraints and Limitations
- Environmental Restrictions: Use is strictly permitted indoors on level floors only; it cannot navigate stairs, ramps, curbs, or outdoor terrain.
- User Requirements: The system requires any trained assistant nearby due to its design which includes handholds and security straps that require human supervision even while operating independently through manual controls like a joystick.
- Physical Specifications: Devices must be customized per individual person based able height, leg length, and joint flexibility provided weight does not exceed 100 kg or cause exceeding waytly taller than 1.94m.
The bottom line: Eve provides an essential toolset where upright standing—rather than transit-based movement (wheelchairs)—is prioritized for daily living activities such as cooking or eye contact with others.
